Missing the taste of a good potato omelette is over
The idea came to Patricia and William , two young entrepreneurs, who one day decided to transform one of the most famous dishes of national cuisine into a souvenir and founded Memories of Madrid.
The tortilla, with onion, is made with natural ingredients and it's canned ; the only preservatives it contains and that makes can last up to 5 years -if stored at room temperature- is the olive oil. They prepare it in a company Fuenlabrada , the same one that has been making them for years for the Spanish army , so that the soldiers can enjoy the taste of their land wherever they are.
The main difference between the tortillas of Memories of Madrid and those of the Army is in the packaging , most colorful. It is signed by the mark of Be Simple design and in it appear the skyline **from Madrid**, some lines reminiscent of those of the meter and the names of the monuments most important in the city.
Each can is dedicated to one year
Also, each can is dedicated to a specific year and in the same packaging is reported -in Spanish and English- an emblematic event that occurred that year and what famous person was born.
As Patricia explained to us, span from 1939 to 2018/2019 , "we have fallen short with the grandparents, many grandchildren come with the idea of being able take it as a souvenir them, so let's do some pre-1939 edits, The other day a 103-year-old lady came into the store! But we won't get that far...”, specifies the founder of the project.
The 2018 edition, in homage to the birth of the store, bears the motto 'I was here' and in January will carry the phrase 'I visited Madrid' in 5 languages : Italian, French, Portuguese, English and Spanish.
Always looking ahead to next year, they plan to change the events of some years, "we have seen that some are not as interesting as we thought, the fall of the wall does not have the same weight the discovery of the walkman , we will see how to find a balance”, emphasizes Patricia.
There is no better souvenir than a Spanish omelette!
The latter has confessed to us that the store, located **in the Plaza Mayor** for a little over a month, has been attended by both locals and local and foreign tourists who are visiting, “We have realized that it is not just a souvenir for foreigners!” , she concludes between laughs.
“As strange as it may seem, the Spanish omelette is not very famous outside our borders, when foreigners think of our food, they think of paella, so, It has happened to us that someone does not know its flavor and is reluctant to take it away ; and then there are some very specific cultural customs, for example, the Japanese are not at all used to canned goods , however the Argentines yes...” she explains.
And now, the most uncomfortable question: Why isn't there a version without onion? “We know that the world is divided, the only reason is because tortillas without canned onions it would lack juiciness ”, and with these words the young entrepreneur settles all kinds of controversies.
The Memories of Madrid omelette can be eaten hot or cold and the container is microwave safe. It does not have an easy opening due to security issues , because that way you can carry it in your hand luggage without any problem. Its price is 9 euros , although at the moment they have the offer 3 for 25 euros and for Black Friday they are thinking of a 3 for 2 or 4 for 3.
Tortillas to go (far away)
It is not an isolated project, they already have in mind to open a second store at the airport , and soon they want to expand through the city center, between ** Gran Vía and Chueca **. And speaking of Chueca, in 2019, there will be, of course, a special edition of the Pride and in addition, another one of Christmas.
