The well-known IKEA meatballs were introduced more than three decades ago . Ingvar Kamprad, founder of the Swedish giant, noticed that many customers went to the store with an empty stomach and many left without buying when they got hungry.

This is how the restaurants that we now find in IKEA stores around the world arose and one of its most delicious and addictive dishes: meatballs, that you can take there or buy them to cook at home.

And precisely, cooking has become the hobby of many during this quarantine: bread, chocolate cookies, cheesecake, banana cake, croquettes, spaghetti alla carbonara...

IKEA meatballs: how much we missed them!

Ingredients (for about 16-20 meatballs):

500 g minced beef 250 g minced pork 1 minced onion 1 clove of garlic (crushed or minced) 100 g breadcrumbs 1 egg 5 tablespoons whole milk salt and pepper to taste

Ingredients for the Iconic Swedish Cream Sauce:

Oil 40 g butter 40 g flour 150 ml vegetable stock 150 ml beef stock 150 ml double heavy cream 2 tsp soy sauce 1 tsp Dijon mustard

Preparation of the meatballs:

1.Mix the minced beef and pork well with fingers to break up lumps. Add the chopped onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg and mix everything. Add the milk and season well with salt and pepper.

2.Make small round meatballs , place them on a plate, cover it and put it in the fridge for 2 hours (so they keep their shape while we cook).

3.In a pan, heat the oil over medium heat. when it's hot, Gently add the meatballs and brown them.

4.When they are golden Put them in a baking pan and cover them. Place them in the preheated oven at 180 ° C (conventional) or 160 ° C v (fan) and cook for 30 minutes.

Preparation of the sauce:

5.Melt 40 g of butter in a pan. Add 40 g of noraml flour and stir for 2 minutes, allowing the flour to cook.

Add 150 ml of vegetable broth and 150 ml of beef broth and continue stirring. Add 150 ml of double cream, 2 teaspoons of soy sauce and 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard. Simmer over low heat until sauce thickens.

6.When ready to eat, serve the meatballs and sauce with your favorite potatoes –either creamy mash or new mini boiled potatoes–. And good luck! Or as they say in Sweden: smaklig måltid!
