The sound of an ambulance fading down the street, a man walking his dog, a family clapping from the window, a young man dancing Resistiré on his balcony, a girl on a bicycle rediscovering the street...

They are images, moments, memories and emotions that we will all keep forever and that we can contemplate in the exhibition Madrid 2020: an unusual city.

The capital's History Museum held a contest to which 325 images were submitted, among which were selected the 40 that are exposed from December 15.

The exhibition collects in these snapshots the photographic gaze of the people of Madrid during confinement. The one that most impacted the public? An unusual completely empty Barajas airport.

A STORY TOLD BY ITS OWN PROTAGONISTS

To some it seems like yesterday, to others it seems like an eternity: Since the state of alarm was decreed in mid-March, the streets of Madrid have been deserted and its citizens confined to their homes, leaning out of their balconies and windows.

May arrived and although with limitations, we were able to return to a city that did not seem the same as the one we left a few weeks ago.

The citizens themselves have been in charge of telling the story of the confinement, a story captured by his photographic lenses and collected in this exhibition that will awaken those indelible memories that we all have recorded in memory.

The contest was convened in order to document the difficult and historic moments that the city experienced during the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The loneliness of the elderly, the joy of a girl in one of her first outings on the street and the daily applause for the toilets They have been the first three images chosen by the jury.

THE WINNERS

The jury chose 40 photographs among all those submitted to the competition, which were later shown on the museum's Facebook account so that citizens could choose their favourite.

In addition, the jury chose a winning photograph and a second and third finalists. The author of the winner is Ulises Fernández, who presented a snapshot baptized as Resignation and hope, showing one of the saddest images of confinement: the loneliness of the elderly.

The second classified photograph is My neighbor at eight in the afternoon, the work of José Luis Amo, which captured a blank close-up of a woman's hands applauding the paramedics.

Finally, the third image chosen by the jury is called Deconfinement, by Ignacio Pérez Crespo, represents the joy of the first outings and is starring a girl who steps out on the street after months without being able to leave her house.

The public favorite has been Empty destination, an image that shows a desolate Barajas airport , totally deserted, without passengers or workers.

The 40 photographs will become part of the museum collection and They can be seen until June 27 from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the History Museum (Fuencarral street, 78). A memory that we cannot –and do not want– to forget.
