NMoQ has been designed by Jean Nouvel.
Burj Qatar or Doha Tower, Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Agbar Tower are some of the great milestones of the architect or urban futurist Jean Nouvel. His new challenge has been transform into the Qatar skyline with a monument that pays tribute to Qatari culture and architecture.
The National Museum of Qatar, christened NMoQ , will open its doors on March 28, 2019 right in the bay of Doha, the country's capital. A total of 52,000 m² for 11 galleries that tell the story of Qatar to this day, a way to preserve and publicize its historical heritage.
For this opening Jean Nouvelle It has had a building with a great legacy, which has been transformed in his style. It is the historic palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani (1880-1957), son of the founder of modern Qatar; a building that formerly had been the home of the Royal Family and seat of government . In addition to the old Qatar National Museum , now occupied by the new NMoQ.
It is located in the capital of Qatar, Doha.
“Qatar is an ancient land, rich in the traditions of the desert and the sea, but also a land that was the seat of many past civilizations. While it has modernized its infrastructure, it remains true to its core cultural values. We look forward to sharing the museum's new experiences with other diverse communities, as well as welcoming international guests in the spring of this year," said Sheikha Al Mayassa, President of Qatar Museums at the launch of NMoQ.
The museum is organized into three main themes spread over its eleven galleries, 'Beginnings', 'Life in Qatar' and 'Building the Nation' . In them you can see some of the most valuable objects of the culture of Qatar such as Pearl Carpet of Baroda , a carpet commissioned in 1865 and embroidered with more than 1.5 million Gulf pearls.
The museum pays homage to the geography of the country and its culture. .
THE DESERT ROSE
" Qatar has a deep relationship with the desert , with its flora and fauna, its nomadic people, its long traditions... to fuse these contrasting stories, I needed a symbolic element. I remembered the phenomenon of desert rose : crystalline forms, like miniature architectural events that emerge from the earth through the work of the wind, salt water and sand", explained the architect.
The visit to this desert rose continues an elliptical circuit that rises and falls smoothly , evoking the natural undulations of the landscape. The visitor's journey culminates in the historic old palace, one of the jewels of the collections of NMoQ , which has now been restored to its original state.
But you can also relax in the new garden areas of the enclosure that reinterpret the landscapes of Qatar, with low dunes, flooded crops and gardens inspired by sabkhas and oases. They also include a heritage garden of traditional plants and large lawned areas.
