THE WAITAKI DAM
“Lake Waitaki Village It was built in the 1930s to house Waitaki Dam workers during construction. between 1929 and 1934”, says Kelli Milmine, from One Agency, the company in charge of managing the property.
In the past the town had about 3,000 inhabitants, with about 1,200 workers. “It was the last great dam built with the pick and shovel method (pick and shovel), used to reduce unemployment rates during a national depression”, explains Kelli to Traveler.es
“Most of the smaller houses were temporary and were removed after the dam was completed in 1934. The permanent houses remained to house the dam staff and people lived there until 1989,” continues Kelli.
When in 1989, the dam became fully automated, families moved to the city and the village was deserted, being sold to private owners. The current owners bought it in 2001.

Surrounded by mountains and on the shores of Lake Waitaki, we found this deserted town in the heart of New Zealand from which the sign of 'for Sale'.
The village, which occupies an area of 14 hectares, has eight houses (a main accommodation with 5 rooms with private bathroom and a managers residence, in addition to a billiard room and reception).
"There's also a restaurant and garage for 9 cars. The property is not complete internally, as some of the houses require reform, but much of the hard work has been done," Kelli told Traveler.es.

“In the surrounding areas, less than an hour's drive away, there are ski slopes, hunting reserves, wineries, lavender fields, hiking trails, gliding, spas and fishing areas”, Kelli tells.
And he continues: "Very close, in Oamaru , there are the famous Moeraki rocks and the little ones blue penguins. Additionally, Oamaru is full of Victorian architecture that has been beautifully preserved, and every November we celebrate the Victorian Heritage Celebrations (Victorian heritage parties).”
Town for sale!
Lovers of nature and fresh air can not miss the path from the Alps to the Ocean (A2O) . “A five-day hiking trail for all abilities that runs right past Lake Waitaki Village and offers some of the best scenery in New Zealand.” Kelli points out.
The beauty of the area has attracted directors who have filmed movies like L The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, “Specifically, a part of the film was shot in Elephant Rocks”, Kelli tells us.
"Right now it's rolling a movie from the Disney factory in the Ahururi Valley, which is less than an hour from the village,” Kelli tells us.
