Discover Japan, Jamaica or Brazil with 'Gaycation'
Part travel show, part documentary, part reality show, the docuseries engages because the camera brings us closer to the daily life of strangers in other countries. The spectator becomes an intruder within a community with which, at the same time, can feel some connection.
Hosted by actress ** Ellen Page ** and her best friend, Ian Daniel, Gaycation It begins with a first trip to Japan. “ My passion for traveling and my curiosity to understand the struggle of the gay community in other places , motivated me to do this show. Gaycation allows me to illuminate the LGBT community in countries where they are oppressed”, explains Ellen at the presentation press conference in Pasadena. Each meeting combines the logistics, the fun but also the oppression suffered by the gay community in the countries that appear in the program.
FIRST CHAPTER: ROAD TO TOKYO
In Tokyo, Page and Daniel explore the city's gay culture: from the area Ni-chōme in Shinjuku until investigating yaoi manga, homo-erotic comics, read mainly by women qualified as rotten. With two of these women, the presenters go to a karaoke bar. “ Gay sex is objectified without understanding its reality ”, explains Page, who leads the conversation for much of that episode. Camera in hand, without any script, Page draws an idea of what it is to be gay in the Japanese country.
“Travelling, producing and presenting this program has changed my life”, confesses the protagonist of June at a press conference. "I couldn't have done Gaycation without Ian: he's outgoing, he talks to everyone. I do not, I am an introvert and I find it difficult to maintain social relationships ”, admits the actress. The idea for the show came about when Ellen became aware of the lack of programs dedicated to the LGBT travel community. “We travel the world from a gay perspective because it is a community that has to think twice before going to certain places ”, acknowledges Ellen.
Page draws an idea of what it is to be gay in the Japanese country
In the three episodes broadcast, the protagonists have visited Japan, Brazil Y Jamaica . “Sometimes the intensity of the show is stressful,” she says, remembering herself, since Gaycation is a project to which Ellen Page has given her heart. “ I had a bad time in Jamaica, where the struggle of the gay community is alarming . And in Brazil, where there are assassins who dedicate themselves to shooting them ”, she acknowledges. The actress assures that filming the series has not been easy: “when you have to interview someone who has been shot, what she has lost a son because of hate ... you feel helpless.”
Gone are the days when Vice was HBO's little brother , the channel lands on the air with daily programming, dedicated to music, fashion, and also LGBT culture. Page is already preparing a second season of Gaycation . "This has only started. If the program resists on the air, we are going to continue. Our goal is to bring the cameras to those countries where injustices are committed against the LGBT community ”, finishes Page. “ What doesn't kill you makes you gayer ”, is the phrase of one of the protagonists that could be the slogan of this travel docuseries.
