Timanfaya National Park

A place like from another world.

If you have ever dreamed of visit mars , do not continue living with the frustration of not being able to step on the Red Planet yet. In Lanzarote, the Timanfaya National Park will take away your whim. The Land of Fire has more than 20 volcanoes for you to gloat . The red and black, surly and sharp landscape will leave you breathless . Here there is volcanic landscapes for all , being the vicinity of the volcanoes baptized as Mountain of Fire, Mountain Rajada or Caldera del Corazoncillo the most beautiful areas of the island, spectacular at the end of the day due to the shades that the horizon acquires, almost Martian. We also enjoy the views of the Manto de la Virgen and the Perinqué Lizard. And we grieved with him silence of the Valley of Tranquility , where not even the wind dares to 'get out of the car'. We also visited the coast, and its El Paso beach, in the northwest of the island, a refuge for shearwater , a bird that arrives in April to nest and whose chicks are protected and guarded by park staff 24 hours a day between August 15 and November 15 (the fine for stealing the young reaches 10,000 euros, plus an additional thousand euros for each bird requisitioned).

Access to the park can be done from Yaiza and Tinajo , the two closest towns and, from the Interpretation Center, they recommend that, in addition to the unmissable volcanic cones, we pay attention to the lichens, the only protagonists of this impressive surface whipped by the trade winds; and to the tourist facilities designed by César Manrique, so well integrated into the otherworldly landscape that we have before our eyes.

And yes, it is difficult to walk through lava, but curiously addictive. Remember that the craters and the rocks keep a very high internal temperature, so much so that one of its best experiences is to enjoy a barbecue in the park.

It is mandatory to go through Mancha Blanca Visitor and Interpretation Center , at km 11.5 of the LZ-67 highway, in Mancha Blanca (Tinajo). Open every day, it has permanent exhibition rooms, a volcanic eruption simulation room, a projection room, a shop and viewpoints. In the Museum-Information point of the Echadero de Camellos In addition to geological explanations, samples of volcanic materials and a representative collection of lichens, there is a sample of traditional agricultural implements and tools. If you are not afraid of these animals, more than adapted to living in hot, sandy deserts, take a dromedary tour.

If you wish to learn more about the National Park on foot, request the service (through the Mancha Blanca Visitor Center) of an interpretive guided route. Please note that they are not held every day and are reservation required . The options are the following: the Tremesana route (low difficulty) and the Litoral route (high difficulty, especially due to its long distance, 9 km). The latter can also be done freely, without an accompanying guide, but unless you know how to 'interpret' what you see, it is not the same.
